Artistic Statement
As an artist, I create work that explores resilience and human emotional connection through movement and rhythm. I view choreography as a powerful language for self-expression - conveying what words cannot capture. I approach my choreography process with deep respect for the body as an experiential archive of sensory memory and emotion. My works center on how rhythm and gesture can display complex human stories evoking a response from audiences.
Rooted in tap dance, contemporary movement, and research, I blend tradition with innovation to explore the body's intuitive knowledge - its ability to act before the mind thinks. By incorporating movement scores within set pieces of work, I allow for this precognitive expression to take place. Tap dance, with its percussive language, serves as my primary medium for exploring this intuition of the body. I am particularly fascinated by how rhythm acts as a bridge between internal experience and external expression, creating moments of unspoken dialogue between performer and audience. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary influences, I push the boundaries of tap dance, evolving its narrative and emotional capacities.
Drawing from my own journey as a survivor of gun violence living with PTSD, I use choreography and improvisation to investigate how the body processes trauma to find resilience. My projects often explore the tension between vulnerability and strength, capturing the ways in which movement can become a means of reclaiming agency - embodying the rhythms of lived experience. Through these explorations, I create spaces where both performers and audiences can confront and overcome difficult truths together.
My artistic philosophy is grounded in a desire to create work that resonates deeply on an emotional and sensory level. Whether through the rhythmic intricacy of tap dancing or the narrative power of contemporary movement, I craft pieces that invite reflection, encourage empathy, and celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. For me, dance choreography is more than movement - it is a testament to our capacity to endure, connect, and transform.
